I’m going to pose a question for you, one that I think everyone should consider. Have you ever wondered the immediate effect a government has on you? Have you ever wondered what might happen if they were to get it catastrophically wrong? Have you ever thought about that? Maybe you should as eventually you will need to vote, eventually you will have say. Do you really think politicians are really what they say they are? They offer to improve schools, healthcare etc, the list goes on and on, but how many of them actually truly know and want to make a difference that will affect as all directly. Do leaders actually solve anything? In most countries they make it worst? Take Australia as an example. Paul Keating who came into power in 1991/92 only made things much worse. Interest rates were at a record high, unemployment was incredibly high at that point and things seemed as if they wouldn’t change. The Howard government has tried to change that and to an extent they have, but has it really made a difference. Have they really tried to benefit the country and not just themselves? Think about it and decide for yourself.
It seems as if many people are starting to lose faith in a democracy. Why is that? Would they rather a dictatorship where you are told what clothes to wear? When you can leave your house? When you can have a shower? When you can use the bathroom? Who would want such a ridiculous system such as that? It offers no fundamental rights whatsoever as you are constantly monitored in everything that you do. You can’t go anywhere without someone watching what you do. Similar to something that might happen at Guantanamo Bay and that’s were suspected terrorists go. Is that implying then that dictators treat their people like terrorists? Evidently, it would seem so but there is of course a lot behind it. A lot of people are of the belief that dictatorships can be good. I beg to differ. I mean look at Iraq before Saddam Hussein got killed, look at what the communists did to their own people, look at North Korea and what they do? Would you want that? Would you deem these unacceptable acts as acceptable? I know I wouldn’t.
I know people who aren’t part of the crowd. They don’t label themselves as a ‘chav’ or ‘emo’ just to fit in. They do what they want to do, they stand alone, but in standing alone they gain respect from people. They stand on their own two feet. When I see them I think to myself ‘they are the people who are going to change the world, make it a better place’. I like to think of myself as one of these people. All these groups of labelled people resent other groups. Dislike them because of the clothes they wear or the music they listen to. It’s another form of racism and it’s wrong. For all they know a ‘chav’ could end up marrying an ‘emo’. If people just forgot about labels for one day and forgot about any judgements they would find new friendships, new relationships. I have friends from different walks of life. Their stories, their culture is different from mine and you know what? It makes my relationships with them more interesting.
It makes me wonder what politics will be like when my generation are thirty or forty years old. Who’s going to be prime minister? Who’s going to make a difference? When I think back to my year at high school I realised that we’re getting a generation of aspiring IT girls, glamour models and football players. I haven’t met many people who actually want to do something really worthwhile. I’ve met only one person who wants to be a doctor. One person who wants to be a writer and three people who want to work in politics. I know a lot of people and only four of them want to do something that could make a difference? That’s just beyond pathetic!
This may seem a bit off topic but it does all come in to the equation really. Social values, moral values, the values each individual holds, its all relevant as each person regardless of the type of fashion they are interested in or who their friends are, it all applies. Maybe its about time all political parties came together and ruled as one don’t you think. Wouldn’t that be ideal, I think that would be what we need to make the world a much better place.
The name of this chapter may not be so great but doesn’t matter what you do, everything involves politics so it all ties in and it all has importance. There are just so many problems in politics that its not funny. No matter how hard politicians try, there are problems regardless of how much they try to improve something.

Rather than starting this story with an extensive analysis about my life so far, its really only going to cover general terms and issues. I find that because I haven’t lived for that long, there is really no point in writing an autobiography that only covers 18 years. I mean, a true autobiography can only be written once a person has experienced it all. I haven’t yet achieved that, so instead, I’ll stay back and write about all the things that happen regularly around this wonderful world we live in.
I’ve had quite a number of people approach me about getting into writing and all that stuff, but to be honest, I never really found it the kind of thing I’d want to do all my life. That was a few years ago and obviously, times have changed. So as I write this book, I’d like to thank those people who first advised me that I should write as they are the ones to have inspired me to write this book. If I had to pick any kind of books to read, it’d definitely be of the crime/thriller genre. I’m fascinated by the lengths in which offenders go to hide their trail, the way police use every trick in the book to catch the thief. I think that is what makes a good story, one that constantly has you twisting and turning and leaving you hanging at the end of a chapter. It encourages you to keep on reading until you find out what happens. I believe that books like that, are the ones that really catch the attention of everyone, even those who don’t read crime/thriller novels. Maybe even in some cases, those who don’t read at all. I think its also important to note that in these days, opinions count regardless of who you are? I myself am quite opinionated when it comes to certain things but I mean who isn’t? Everyone is entitled to having a say because it is what they believe. No opinion is wrong and opinions can collectively form into more than just an opinion. With enough of the same opinion, people start to think that this may actually be true. This is how many of the biggest things today started. Did you know that many people were of the belief that American presidents deserved their own parliamentary retreat. This opinion became so popular that it became reality and since then, American presidents have had an external retreat. It just goes to show that opinions can be just as strong as anything else that is said.
A lot of people probably think that a book would start with an introduction about myself. Now I did think of doing that but books that do that tend to drag on about things that don’t really become relevant at any point in time. Most books that start with talk of a person tend to flow irregularly and that really isn’t a good thing as it turns readers off. So I started with a bit of optimism, a bit of randomness, just something to grab your attention straight away. You all have your own opinion.
My name is Ricardo Henrique Goncalves Ascenso. Certainly hard to grasp if you aren’t from a Western European background. Although my name does happen to be Ricardo, I certainly don’t mind being called Ricky or Ric or just something that’s associated with my name. I take great pride in being of the nationality that I am as it who I am, it is who I represent, its who I stand up for. Just because I may have been born in Australia, it doesn’t mean that I lose the Portuguese heritage that I am so fondly proud of. Many people have dual countries that they represent and to me, if that’s the case, each country has their personal significance of both you and your life. I enjoy the arts, but more the side of journalism, news, current affairs etc. Its just fascinating to see the ways in which stories are put together, the way in which they are presented and the way in which the audience interprets them. I’m also quite interested in the art of sport. Cricket, basketball, soccer, NRL, AFL, Rugby, Tennis, you name it and I’ll most likely be interested in it. Its just an instinctive knowledge that I have of these sports after watching so many sporting events that have changed the world. Even those that occurred before I was born are ones that I’ll always remember. Sport just has a way of grabbing your attention when something big happens regardless of what sport it is. Out of everything there is to do in the world, they would have to be the two areas that I take the most pride in, the two areas that fascinate me to the point where I not only watch them but look at them and learn what they do, how they do it? Why they do it? What makes them do it? I constantly ask myself these questions as I view the news and sports. Conversation is important to me. Anyone that can start a good conversation about anything at all definitely rates highly in books. A conversation is the best place to start about anything and regardless of the different opinions that two people might hold, I enjoy having debates with people about all topics ranging from sport to politics. I often find myself having several hour long conversations at a time. I’d like to think that I have good general knowledge about any known facts on any topic and that I have intellectual smartness but its hard to assess yourself on whether or not this is the case.
Overall, I am wondering as to whether I should include events that have happened in my past as they may have some significant bearing on the story down the track regardless of the shape that they take. It’s a bit of a difficult decision to make really but I will think about it. You could probably learn many things about me that you didn’t know about me should I include it
